The lobby is lush, decadent, and the perfect mixture of debauchery and excess. The last time she witnessed such a gathering was the opera house in Indianapolis. Ah, the times before the Monster. This is the atmosphere that Esther was groomed for, but she ignores it for now. She has a goal, a motivation. The Quebecois Daeva observes for a wise amount of time, gliding through the room, her ears pricked and sifting through the cacophony as she listens here and there. Her brown eyes are deep, faceted in the lights of the Theatre lobby, her wine-dark mouth full and inviting, and her form graceful yet powerful as she moves through the grand lobby. She spies a lovely brunette in fashionable yet elegant couture, holding court as it were in a well-lit alcove of the lobby. Several people approach her and speak, and Esther merely observes, reading her body language, her soft smile, the confidential tilt of her head. She overhears the words "My thanks, Mistress Lasky" layered beneath the din of the lobby and tucks them away into her own repertoire. Lasky, she knows that name, oft-spoken among the Daeva of the great lakes region, admired for her skills to rival those of any well-known harpy. She is the first gate. When the current crowd of supplicants has dissipated, Esther makes her way forward, her envelope clutch tucked under her arm and her hands fold together before her almost serenely. On her right wrist is a lovely bracelet bearing a wrought camellia blossom, its pink soft and glowing, and bringing out the natural hue beneath Esther's mocha skin. She stops a respectful, but visible and vocal distance. Her beast thrums and growl-purrs a little in the presence of the other Daeva. "Mistress Lasky," she says in that honey-and-cream tone, "Good evening. Might I have a moment of your time if you are at your leisure?" When given acquiescence, Esther approaches closer. She stands before the other woman with the grace and ease of a born Succubus. "Mistress Lasky, my name is Esther Montesori. It is a pleasure to meet such an esteemed clanmate here in Chicago. It gives me comfort, being in a new city. I am lately come to Chicago, on a business venture, and the timing of this month's Theatre is quite impeccable for me to make introduction and request permission to make a home here, for the foreseeable future, at least. And I can see that you are the gatekeeper, that you hold the keys, Mistress Lasky." ((With Lasky at Daeva 4 and Esther at 3, Esther is well aware of who this woman is, even if she has never met her before. She has heard a goodly amount about this woman over the differing Succubus channels over the years.))

In her movements through the crowd of corpses, Esther had sensed the tension surrounding Justine: the jeweled spider at the center of so many webs. The Mistress of Elysium was loved and loathed, admired by many for her countless connections and resented for the speed with which her star had risen. Esther was no stranger to this world of smiles as sharp as daggers, poised to plunge into a person's back and twist. There were many here who would see Justine's star fall, just as so many had wished to see Esther's.
Justine's already blushing skin warms pleasantly at Esther's approach. "Of course, Madam," Justine says with a dazzling smile, stepping closer to her Clanmate. Her full mouth rises into a natural and unguarded smile, dark eyes sparkling with starry light as her kinswoman speaks her greetings. Her charm is breathtaking, unaided by supernatural tricks. "You are welcome here, Mme. Montesori," she says invitingly. "Truly. With every passing night, our city grows more dazzling, and on our Prince's behalf I wish your business every blessing. I seem to recall you have a talent for producing most elegant locales for our Night Society to bloom."

Esther returns Justine's dazzling smile as the woman draws closer to her. "Merci beaucoup, Mme. Lasky," she replies gratefully, "And I discovered long ago that, if I desired elegant places to frequently occupy, I often needs must create them myself."
Her dark eyes meet her clanswoman's again, shimmering with that deep-seated smolder that came naturally to her, yet only heightened by the same that is gifted to their clan. The turn of her mouth is classic and lovely as she speaks once more. "My newest establishment shall be opening within the weekend, and I should be most pleased to provide a VIP room for the upper echelons of the court, should it ever be needed or desired."
She then glances around at the nests of murders that surround them, meeting gazes boldly and yet with all the poise and grace of a born noblewoman.
'You do not scare me,' those eyes seem to say as she stands with the Mistress of Elysium, a position she has previously held in her own right, among several.
"I will admit that it has been a long while since I was a guest of such a large and...august court," she comments smoothly, "But it does seem that you and those in position do run things as smoothly as can be."

"That is so kind," Lasky replies with candle-shine dancing in her eyes. "And I do hope you will remain here for some time. We savor our peace and prosperity, which has been purchased at such a precious price." The streets had run black with blood, and would not lose the stain. "I wonder, Madame, from which court do you come?"

"I have been mostly traveling for the past few years but, in the last few months, I returned to Muncie, Indiana. The court had been revived by Sir Sebastian Ainsworth de Villain, heir to Baron Lucien Villain. While I was there, the city was set upon by occult forces, which were defeated by the court but with loss and some upheaval to the city. I came here to Chicago some weeks ago to speak with investors about opening a new establishment and, in my absence, the city was invaded, this time by hunters."
Why try to lie about it? Everyone had seen the news and any vampire worth their unlife knew what they had seen.
"I do not know how many survived or escaped the massacre. Needless to say, I did not return," she further informs the Mistress of Elysium.

The air tenses, hardening like water flash-frozen to solid ice. Lasky and several of the eavesdropping Kindred had heard a great deal about Muncie. That city was otherwise a meaningless, insignificant backwater - but what had happened there would not be forgotten.
"Why?" Lasky asks. "Why did these hunters descend upon the city? I seem to recall that you were Harpy of that Domain...?" The implication hangs like a machete - had a scandal gone unchecked while she was away? Had she caused this massacre by her absence?

Esther's expression doesn't change, though her dark eyes glint in the lights of the lobby. "When I returned to Indiana, every other domain had gone silent. No one had heard from them in months - not Kokomo, not Terra Haute, not Bloomington, and not Indianapolis. Until Sir Ainsworth returned, Muncie had been silent as well. It is my belief that these hunters had previously attacked Indiana and, when the bell tower on Ball State's campus collapsed - caused by what is believed to be a vampire's released beast attacking our sherriff, it gave them all the excuse they needed to come back and exterminate us again."
Contempt drips from wine-dark lips though her words are spoken matter-of-factly.

"My heavens," Lasky breathes, hand over her heart. "How ghastly. To be dragged from their havens, left to the sun... Bless the night that you were yourself spared the scourge. My condolences on your loss." The words somehow seem sincere, though of course every monster in earshot was surely bristling with pleasure at another's suffering.

Esther inclines her head in thanks. "Gratitude. I have endured much in my unlife and survived; I find I am not so easily wiped from this somewhat mortal coil," she quips, her voice still honey and cream. She cared not a whit for those hungry vultures draped over couches, mounted on mortals, or hanging on her every word. (As they should be, though.) She smiles again at Justine, a smile that shows the silken beauty with steel beneath.
"Would you take an evening with me, Mistress Chatelaine, when my establishment is open? I should love to hear tell the history of your illustrious city and court," she then invites, "I should be overjoyed at your company."

"It would be my pleasure," Justine smiles with perfectly painted lips. She extends a hand, along with her card. The semi-opaque, mirror-like surface glints just so with the words The Discarded Image, along with Justine's name and contact information. "I do hope you'll give me a call when the doors open. I look forward to toasting your latest, greatest success."

"Of course I will," Esther replies, taking the card with deft fingers of her own, plainly admiring its construction before glancing around the theatre again, smiling that wine-dark smile at some of the monsters strewn about.
"It's my pleasure to be the guest of such an accomplished hostess," she then says, "I simply most return the favor."
