Help, the absolute worst of the four-letter words, and the one I know best. A six-year-old on tiptoes, peering into my brother's crib, my mother on the bedroom floor scrounging for the booze. That word coming out of their mouths as a gasp, "help." I've learned over time that "help" doesn't mean grab the other paint roller, or hold the ladder still. It means,"hey, I screwed up, now what are we going to do?"
Every now and then, it's something more than a four-letter word. Sometimes, it's just a baby crying for his sister from the confines of his crib. And sometimes, if you're lucky, help comes without asking, because somewhere nearby, there's someone who'd rather keep you from falling, than help you up after you do.
Rain again. The winter weather was mocking her; first with snow now with freezing rain. The new year hadn't ushered in anything worth celebrating. The city on the verge of collapse, a missing Sheriff and now someone stealing dead bodies from the grave yard.
It'd be nice to escape for a while.
The rain fell heavier, chilly against her cold skin. Angela's mind was racing, the excitement of leaving, of being free and released from the confines of Muncie. Indianapolis was her home as a human, and even in death she resided there. It held answers and memories that she wanted to have returned.
The rain soaked heavy into her jacket, falling in icy sheets. The street light gave enough illumination, causing the falling ice to glow with a garish orange. The young Venture hadn't been standing or waiting long. She was patient, even as the rain fell harder.

Driving in this weather was suicide, ice on the roads, and more accumulating. That was the frustrating thing about Muncie, it never really got quite cold enough to snow. Sebastian pulled up next to Angela in a large black SUV. Four wheel drive and heavy, it was perfectly suited for driving in the ice. He rolled down the window, the sound whining and then popping as the ice broke off of the descending glass.
"You look miserable," he greeted her from the warm confines of the interior of the SUV. "Get in."

Angela was more then happy to comply.
The warmth of the SUV was just what her dead bones needed. Well, maybe not completely. But the feel of hot air against her frozen skin and rain dripped hair, was a comfort.
"Thanks." Her scent filled the small front section of the SUV.
"We'll be going to five fifty-two West Merrill Street, Indianapolis." Angela pushed the wet strands from her face and buckled her seat belt, remembering the last time she had driven with Ainsworth.

Sebastian smiled as she climbed in, then reached over and programed in the address into the onboard GPS. Easing the truck away from the curb he started driving with surprising caution, especially given the last time. The ride was smooth and easy going as they drove in silence out of the town and into the darkness between Munice and the freeway.
"So why this place?" Sebastian asked breaking the warm silence.

Angela tried to remember, tried to dig deep for those lost memories. But she couldn't.
"It's my last known residence and place of business. Apparently, I owned the property." She pulled out a key.
"I had this mailed to me a few weeks ago. Hopefully, I can find some answers there."

"I suppose that is as good of a place to start as any." Sebastian had to admire Angela, faced with the ultimate challenge of un-life, she was facing it head on and without hesitation. Not knowing who she was didn't seem to have any effect on who she actually was. He was sure it bothered her after a fashion but you couldn't tell.
"Any concerns about what you're going to find down here?" He asked, pulling the truck onto the 69 freeway heading into Indianapolis. He opened up the throttle as they got to the better maintained road, though he kept the speed low enough to not attract any attention.

The heat from the vent had wrapped her in a blanket of melting warmth. Angela watched as they past the flat, dead lands. The highway, the only lively section of this small farm town. Sebastian's words filtered through her restless mind, pulling her back from the frustration of not knowing.
"Last I remember hearing, this area was werewolf territory. But, if I held residence there, maybe they moved on or maybe I was allowed to set up shop. I don't know." Angela, surprisingly didn't feel any anxiety about the possibility of werewolves. Which, funny enough, bothered the young Venture. She rarely allowed herself to become complacent.
"I understand we're going in blind, Sebastian. But this was home and I'm not leaving until I find out what the hell happen here." According to Esther, she had once been Sheriff. The idea that Indianapolis had fallen do her inabilities; though her body language and tone never gave way to her emotions, it angered Angela.

Sebastian laughed. Her hypocrisy caught him completely off guard.
Was she not the one who chastised you for running in blind with the shadows?
And werewolves?
Sebastian are you sure you can handle wolves?
I'll be fine, if things go poorly she's the one in trouble.
Will you help her?
If I can.
And if you can't?
Then I'll mourn her loss.
"Lovely, I always wanted to die at the hands of a werewolf. I will pretend that you were given a free pass, that way it won't seem as much of a suicide mission." He couldn't help the sarcasm from creeping into his voice. Perhaps he was relaxing from the last couple of days, leaving behind the stress of leadership, and the burden of Princehood, or perhaps he was just being a dick.

Angela gave him a glare as his laughter bellowed throughout the confines of the front section of the SUV.
"We're not going to die and I'm sure werewolves are the least of our problems. If that city is dark, we'll have to face whatever has taken over." She gave a small smile and stretched, her back popping lightly as she flexed her dead bones.
"Besides, this isn't a suicide mission. It's a fact finding mission."
More so then the last "fact finding mission" I was a part of.
Angela turned to face the chuckle head driving the vehicle.
"If I thought it was a suicide mission, Sebastian, you wouldn't be here. I would have come alone." Turning she once again focused on the lively road.

"I've said many of the same things Angela," he smiled. There was a slight thrill that ran through his body, of going out and getting his hands dirty, of wandering into a potentially life threatening situation. The hunt was on, and though they were hunting information, it wasn't like they were wandering into an office building. Here be dragons.
"Truly though, I hope this is uneventful," he lied. "If werewolves really did prowl this area, and no longer do so, then we'll have bigger problems than finding your memory."

Angela agreed. If her heart still functioned, the dead muscle would be pounding against her chest with excitement, anxiety and the fear of the unknown. But it didn't. She could image the feeling, but it was a dull situation compared to a true feeling of a live heart beat.
"We won't be there any longer then we need to be."
Angela looked to Sebastian, "my goal is to look around the building and get some information. I'm not here to rock the boat."

"Fair enough, we'll keep it quick then." Sebastian let the car pass into silence as the cruised down the freeway. He took note of any police on both sides of the road, not that it mattered too much, cops didn't typically bother him. He would either make them go away or have their badge, it didn't make much difference to him.
They were making good time in spite of the road conditions, and Sebastian could feel the excitement build as they approached their destination.

Angela passed the time in silence, her eyes focused on the calm of the road and the orange glow of Circle City. The light population of Indianapolis was warming, pulling her in like a moth to a flame. The city was still alive with humans, even if the kindred population had grown mute. Angela was happy to be home and even though her kindred life had been a blur, she remembered her human life, and what the city had meant to her as a child.
"Take this next exit and then merge right and continue through downtown and past the Circle." The street lamps illuminated the Monument Circle, the horse drown carriages carrying patrons about town. Police cruisers creeping by, patroling the streets for prostitutes and dealers. Angela missed it all, though she would never voice her desire for a taste of her human life back, she longed for the good old days.
"Continue through and turn left on West Merrill Street. It'll be on the left."

Memories came flooding back to Sebastian as they crawled through the city streets. He'd remembered the old Princes, how he hated every last one of them. How many times had his sisters been traded away like cattle to return broken or diseased? What choice did they have? Thralls have their place, even if it was at the hands of Lancea mad man.
Sebastian turned off the GPS, he'd kept it on as a formality, but he didn't need it. Playing chauffeur to Kindred for the better part of a 100 years, you learn how to navigate the streets without a map or aid, or you got flogged for your insolence at getting lost. He nodded quietly as Angela gave him direction, turning when she indicated. And then they were there.
The wheels squealed slightly in protest, as they slowed to a stop. Sebastian put the vehicle in park, "Here we are," he said looking out the window. The whole city was bathed in cold, but the old steam pipes that ran under the city helped keep a lot of the ice off the streets. Never-the-less, he was thankful for the chill in the air, it meant there would be less people on the street.

The cold metal pressed into her cold flesh as Angela gripped the key in her jacket pocket. Stepping from the warmth of the SUV, the wind chill bit into her skin like a hungry animal. The cold didn't faze her and as her eyes darted from the street to the building; Angela focused more on the shadows the street lamps couldn't illuminate. The city was alive with humans, even though the frigged winter weather had chased them to the warmth of their homes.
Crossing the broken and cracked sidewalk, with gutters emptying out steam and rancid oders, Angela greeted the large red brick building with a stoic expression. If the young Venture was confused or frightened - it didn't show.
The building's edge met a cobble stone alleyway. The lights from street daring to bare a glow into its recesses. The structure was in the open, surrounded by human's and unprotected by any recluse setting. Angela had been hidden in plain sight. Her eyes were drawn upward, the large iron numbers above the door called out to her, but she didn't speak the language - not anymore. Pulling the key from her jacket pocket, she took her time; sliding the key into place, turning it slowly. Reaching for her highpoint was second nature, always had been. Pushing the door open, the street lights gave glow to the darkened interior and Angela proceeded into the musty building.
